Program Summary: |
Memphis Community Development Partnership’s (MCDP) mission is to build and support strong partnerships for community-based development. It was begun with a challenge grant from the Ford Foundation, matched by the City of Memphis with additional support from other foundations. It helps distressed communities rebuild, redefine and reorganize by (1) awarding grants to community-based development agencies; (2) operating a $1.75 million homeownership loan fund; and (3) with development and participating in programs such as the Community Alliance Program.
The Community Alliance Program supports strong neighborhoods through training, technical assistance, and grants to neighborhood associations. Program goals include: (1) helping neighborhood organizations identify and mobilize resources to address neighborhood issues; (2) increasing neighborhood leaders’ community organizing skills and knowledge; (3) providing opportunities for neighborhood groups to share and learn from one another; (4) increasing the base of resident participation and leadership in developing solutions to neighborhood problems; and (5) increasing financial options and other resources available for neighborhood self-help efforts. The Partnership’s grants of $3,000-$5,000 per neighborhood association are used for training, technical assistance, and/or to implement specific projects. Southern Empowerment provides most of the community organizing and board strengthening work. The University of Memphis (Dr. Phyllis Betts with the Center for Community Building and Neighborhood Action) and other consultants also are used at times. All grantees must take Southern Empowerment training; other neighborhood associations can also participate in the training.
MCDP’s work between May 1, 1998 and April 30, 2002 was evaluated by Dr. Phyllis Betts with the University of Memphis. | |
